Lisa has done extensive research on voice and gender, analyzing what cues we follow when assessing the gender of a voice, and discovering the connection between gendered bodily practices and the development of the vocal instrument. After discovering that gender cues in the voice are much more dependent on cultural training than on biological dimorphism, Lisa has developed a method to queer the voice without medical intervention. She has presented on this topic at the Voice and Speech Teacher's Association, the Performance Studies International Conference, and the National Women's Studies Conference to present her findings. You can read about her work in the Global Performance Studies journal.
