We are shocked and reeling from the recent New York Times investigation into deeply disturbing allegations of sexual abuse and pedophilia connected to Cesar Chavez.
We reject abuse in any form and believe that mental illness, trauma, or any other condition does not excuse or permit harm. We recognize that allegations of this nature require careful, ethical attention: respect for survivors, due process insofar as it is possible in historical cases, and an honest reckoning with how movements remember and honor their leaders.
Our work on the musical Between Dirt and Sky was created from hours of archival research and interviews over many years. In that research we encountered widespread respect and reverence for the leaders and grassroots organizers of the farmworkers movement. We continue to hold deep respect for Dolores Huerta and the many leaders, organizers, and rank-and-file members whose courage and sacrifice built the movement.
At the same time, we honor and are concerned for the people who have come forward with their stories. We recognize the bravery it takes to speak publicly about abuse and we join others in calling for compassionate support for survivors.
As artists whose work is inspired by the farmworkers movement, we are committed to listening, learning, and responding responsibly.
We stand with survivors, and we continue to hold in highest regard the millions who labored for dignity, safety, and justice for agricultural workers.
